LBJ Statue unveiled

Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of the 36th president of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson, gestures after unveiling a statue of her father at Welhausen School in Cotulla, Texas, on Saturday, April 13, 2019. President Johnson was in his 20s when he taught at the school, where the students were mostly Mexican-American, in 1928 and 1929. The statue was created by Armando Hinojosa.  (Billy Calzada/The San Antonio Express-News via AP)

Hurricane Harvey Update

La Salle County has activated the Emergency Center as a location to address State, Regional and local safety issues relating to Hurricane Harvey. La Salle County has been advised by the National Red Cross and the State of Texas to direct evacuees north to the Freeman Coliseum, 201 Gembler Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78219. The Red Cross has established shelters there to handle the evacuees from the Coastal Areas and their medical needs.

Hurricane Harvey was declared a category 3 hurricane by the National Weather Center and expected to make landfall in the Corpus Christi area with a variance of 20 miles north and south of that point. People are urged to move north because a large amount of rain and flooding is expected. We are fortunate to have the hotel space for many evacuees but have very limited medical facilities. With the limited space, we have called in all emergency personnel. The stations in Encinal and Cotulla will be staffed to respond to all local needs as this storm progresses.

We have seen a large amount of traffic in town and shelters have designated by local church organizations for locals if weather conditions require evacuation for locals. There is RV Space available at JD's RV Park at 956-307-0746, the Civic Center will be open to assist up to 300 people in case the weather doesn't permit them to travel forward. The phone number at the Convention Center is 830-483-0165. There is a plan to have other shelters for local residents open as this storm progresses through the weekend.

In the past, severe rain in La Salle County has cut off Highway access North of Cotulla on IH 35, South of Cotulla on IH 35 near Caiman creek exit as well as potential flooding on Hwy 97, and all Farm to Market Roads surrounding the area. Because of previous flooding, all state roads east of IH 35 will be closed to heavy traffic to help expedite the evacuees from the coastal areas.

County Roads Cameron Road, Cochina Roads, Coquate Road, El Jardin, Evans Road and Natus are closed to all traffic with the exception of passenger vehicles and trucks.
